The Ohio Star Block

Recently, the Crafter’s Edge Design Team was informed of a customer service question. A consumer was interested in an Ohio Star Block pattern.

I volunteered to create the Ohio Star Block using my Crafter’s Edge Crossover II and dies. I wanted to do this project because I hold the state of Ohio near to my heart.

I was born and raised in West Chester, Ohio-a northern suburb of the city of Cincinnati. I lived in Ohio for the first 22 years of my life. I moved to Kentucky (right across the river from Cincinnati) when I married in 2009 but just 1 year later my husband and I moved back to the heart of it all.

Life went on and my husband and I moved again due to job advancement opportunities and we ended up in Kentucky and Indiana and Kentucky again.

However, we finally found our forever home back in the Buckeye State. We now live in Fairfield which is also a suburb of Cincinnati.

Ohio is a great place to live. It offers big city living and entertainment, suburban life or rolling farm lands. It is also a place where on Monday you will be in your winter coat but by Wednesday you’ll be wearing your flip flops and wanting to turn the AC on. Ohio Star Quilt Block

The Ohio Star quilt block is best recognized by its three rows of squares. The top and bottom each comprise of two solid squares surrounding an hourglass block also know as a quarter square triangle block. The middle row has two hourglass blocks surrounding a solid square. When sewn together they create a star.

How to make the basic Ohio Star Quilt Block using Crafter’s Edge

For this project you will need the EVEN QST set

FUN FACT! If you don’t have a Crossover II but have an Accuquilt machine, you can still make these blocks. Crafter’s Edge dies work with the Accuquilt as long as you have the conversion platform. You can find the conversion platform here.

The measurements below make a 12 INCH Finished Block

You can also make this block in a 6″ and 18″ finished size using the same die sets.

6″ Finished Ohio Star Quilt Block Supplies:

  • 2 1/2″ square die
  • 2 1/2″ quarter square die

18″ Finished Ohio Star Quilt Block Supplies:

  • 6 1/2″ square die
  • 6 1/2″ quarter square die

Follow the instructions above.

But the FUN doesn’t end there!

There are so many variations to the Ohio Star block. By switching up the color/fabric or adding a few half square triangles or small squares the possibilities may be endless. Below I have provided instructions for several different Ohio Star variations that will add fun and flair to your next quilt project. They all use the Crafter’s Edge Crossover II and dies.

To convert these measurements into 6″ finished blocks substitute the following:

The 4 1/2″ HST/QST/SQUARES become 2 1/2″

The 2 1/2″ HST/QST/SQUARES become 1 1/2″

To convert these measurements into 18″ finished blocks substitute the following:

The 4 1/2″ HST/QST/SQUARES become 6 1/2″

The 2 1/2″ HST/QST/SQUARES become 3 1/2″ (This requires the ODD QST die set)

The possibilities are endless when it come to variations of the Ohio Star Quilt Block.

All my blocks together. I made these using my bottomless pit of scraps!
A little behind the scenes…..My dog Zeezo!

Which one is YOUR favorite??

BONUS!!!!

I did say the possibilities were endless didn’t I??? Well look below at 6 more variations. Perhaps in the near future I will personally make these and write instructions for them too! You can see I use squares, HST and QST to create the blocks below just like the ones above.

Happy Sewing!
