White Rabbit Blog Hop

Challenge: Make something with white fabrics, rabbits, or white rabbits.

For today’s hop, I chose to go with white-ish fabrics.

I saw a technique on Instagram, and I really wanted to try it. The technique involves fusing squares onto a fusible interfacing such as HeatnBond before sewing all the squares together. Fusing the squares to the interfacing eliminates piecing all the squares together individually. Below, I will try to explain the process.

  1. Start by laying out your squares where you want them to go on your fusible interfacing. I used medium weight non-woven interfacing by Thermoweb.
  2. Next, press and fuse the squares.
  3. Fold along the short seams and sew a 1/4″ down each row.
  4. For ease of sewing the next step, clip the small area where the blocks meet.
  5. Next, fold along the longer seams and sew a 1/4″ down each row, nesting the seams as you go.
  6. Finally, press really good.

After I created the top piece, I needed to decide what I wanted to make with it. I chose to make some hexagon coasters. I really like how they turned out.

After I made the coasters, I was still in the sewing mood, and I wanted to make something else. I played around with a cathedral window block and ended up making this fun little pin cushion that can also hold a lot of sewing clips.

It was by accident that I created it, and it was so easy that I went back and made another and recorded my process. You can see it for yourself by clicking the pink photo!

  1. I have tried that technique before, but it was a huge bag and I wasn’t successful. I’ll have to try something smaller like that cute coaster. It turned out perfect! Sweet pin and clip holder, too. Thank you for joining in, Julia!

  2. Fun projects. I really like the fusible square method. I have made some bags that way. They come out super nice. Great pin cushion too. I like that it holds clips in the edge.

  3. What neat projects!!! And I LOVE the pincushion that holds the clips … that would (theoretically) stop my clips from ending up everywhere!
    Thanks for sharing!

  4. I love it when a pin cushion can hold clips. Yours looks great. I too have tried this technique before on a bag and ended up with a huge mess. Your version looks like a much easier jumping off point. Love the coasters. Thanks for all the hints and tips

  5. Your pincushion is a winner for me. I love it. I’m going to try to get my work done before your Thermoweb party tonight. hope to see you there. Thanks for the tips for making today

  6. That is a fun technique and the coasters turned out great. Love your pincushion, too, which is especially go for those us clip and pin addicts!

  7. Love both of your projects!! I often use the technique for the coasters, so much easier! Love that you accidentally came up with a brilliant idea pincushion!! xx

  8. Great use of that technigue’ = would make much studier coasters. I’m a pincushion nut, so these are cute!

  9. I love those coasters – they’re a different shape than most. And – the pincushion idea is inspired! Having those clips handy might mean I’d remember using mine instead of having them stuck in a drawer.
