When Pigs Fly Blog Hop

The June challenge “When Pigs Fly” is the time to get them out of those bags, bins and closets!

PIGS – Projects in Grocery Sacks

UFOS -Unfinished Objects

WIPs – Works in Progress

I guess the BIG question is this: What determines the difference between the three options above???

Either way, I finished 2 projects for this hop.

Avatar, The Last Airbender

The first project was inspired by my favorite animated show; Avatar, The Last Airbender. The animated show was amazing and I have watched it several times even though it’s for kids. I love when a show’s writing is fluid from the first episode to the last and even continues with sequels and prequals. Many of the themes are very “not kid friendly” but most of that goes right over their heads which makes it nice for adults to watch along side their children. I am excited that there are going to be more shows from the original series writers and the Netflix show as well. I, like most fans couldn’t get through the movie that was made–it was terrible.

I made quilt blocks of each of the main characters. I sewed them into a runner wall hanging that will eventually be hung with my collection of other collectables. If you or anyone you know are fans, you will notice that I quilted each of the Element Tribe symbols over the characters.

Pixel Quilt

My second project was a quilt top I made on a retreat earlier this year. I gathered up all my 2.5″ scrap squares that I had been saving over the years and designed a pixel quilt. I made the quilt top at the retreat, sewing it in 5 x 5 sections.

The quilt measures 58″ square. When I finished the top, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with it as I have totes full of quilts to be gifted. I definitely didn’t need another quilt at this time, but I loved the design and all the nostalgia from the different fabrics and wanted to keep it for myself.

I finally decided to finish it with this hop and instead of making it a traditional quilt, I added towel fabric to the back. There is no middle layer to this piece making it have a very nice drape and thickness. I love how it turned out and I am excited to take it to the beach this summer! I have a feeling that my youngest might try and take it from me. When she was younger, she used to sleep with a towel at night. I think she liked the breathability and texture of them.

  1. Two super finishes. All I’ve seen is the movie, and I enjoyed it, so I’m glad I saw it first, after what you’ve said. The pattern on your squares quilt is wonderful, you did a great job of designing it.

  2. What great finishes. Avatar is really a fun runner and I love how you used towel on the back of your pixel quilt. That will be great for the beach!

  3. It is so wonderful to finish a PIGS, a UFO, or a WIP. You did a fantastic job getting several projects finished. Keep on with your progress.

  4. I am one of those that never finished watching the original Avatar. I’ll have to check out the new one. What a fun wall hanging of the characters! I’ve never made a pixel quilt or used towel fabric on the back. It will be a great beach quilt, for sure. Great PIG finishes, Julia!

  5. I like the idea of toweling for a beach blanket backing – very clever.

  6. Your characters are wonderful and will be an amazing addition to your collectibles collection.
Great use of your 2.5 squares and a very interesting idea using the toweling for a backing. hmmmmm

  8. Two great finishes. I don’t really know Avatar but I still find it really a fun runner! Your pixel quilt is gorgeous – what a good idea to use towelling on the back it, giving it a different sort of use.
