Quilt Block Mania: Music

Welcome, Quilt Block Mania fans, to my site Inflorescence Designs. I am so joyful you are here! This is my sixth month doing Quilt Block Mania and I am really excited to bring you fun and free blocks each month. Each month will feature a quilt block you can get for FREE! The blocks might be traditional pieced, paper pieced or applique (I love doing all of these techniques). But download them quickly because some blocks will not remain free forever and will be available for purchase in my Etsy Shop.

This month’s theme is music. My first music system was a Walkman/cassette player. However, for this month I decided to design an mp3 iPod player which came out while I was in college and was awesome for walking around campus!

This pattern is paper pieced and there are no formal instructions, so this pattern is for someone knowledgeable or willing to learn. It is only TWO pieces! Both 6″ and 12″ are available in the download. The photo below shows the 6″ block assembled into a mini quilt.

The photo above shows the block using the 6″ size. I made 6 blocks and used my backing fabric as the binding. Below you can see how to make your own this way.

  • Begin by layering your quilt front, batting and backing fabric. Baste your usual way. I used Thermoweb’s Basting Spray. Make sure your backing extends at least 2″ beyond your quilt.
  • Next, quilt your piece. Make sure to not sew the batting to the backing beyond the edge of your quilt top.
  • Trim away the batting.
  • Depending on how much overlay you want with your binding, you may need to square up and trim your backing piece. I trimmed mine to 1″ all the way around.
  • Next, fold over your backing and press. Fold again and press again. Clip or pin in place.
  • To make mitered corners, fold over the corner into a triangle. Press.
  • Next, fold your backing over and press.
  • Fold over again and press again. Pin or clip in place. Do this to all 4 sides.
  • Finally, sew all the way around to finish your quilt.
