Felt Donut Pincushion

Welcome Blog Hoppers to Inflorescence Designs! I am so joyful you are here! Thank you again to Carla from Creatin in the Sticks for hosting.

If you visited my blog for the “Salt and Sand” hop last month you may remember my story about wanting to create a wall quilt for my kitchen. Well the quilt I created for my wall just screams “In the Kitchen.”

I created this quilt and the associated patterns when I couldn’t find any patterns to help create what I envisioned. This is the quilt that started me on my blogging/quilting/pattern making journey.

This is the quilt that started my quilting journey. My family LOVES to eat breakfast-anytime of the day!
This quilt uses the 6″ blocks. The blocks pictured here are the ones I wrote final patterns for.

However, I knew I wanted to make something new for this hop. But what to make was still the question of the day. That all changed when I found out that I was chosen to be a designer for Crafters Edge. I started looking at their dies and two stood out to me straight away. The circle and flower dies. I saw how they would play well together to create one of my favorite treats…DONUTS!

Once I got my machine, I got straight to work. I made for you today several things. I really like to get the most out of the tools that I use so I created several items using the Crafters Edge dies shown below. I hope you enjoy my delicious kitchen creations.

Here are the dies I used for this project. All the dies and the Crossover II Machine can be found here.

I made two donut mug rugs. They are 9″x 10″ They work great for my morning coffee and breakfast. For the mug rugs I used the 4″ flower die for the icing, the 1 1/2″ circle for the center, and the 5″ circle for the donut. The donut pieces were fused with heat n bond and appliqued prior to quilting. If interested in a full photo tutorial please let me know in the comments!
I even used it as a mug rug/ mouse pad while writing this post!

I also created a donut pot holder! For this project, I used the same 1 1/2″ circle die for the center, 6″ circle for the main donut and the scallop die for the icing. The potholder measures 9″ square. Again, if you would like a full photo tutorial please let me know in the comments!

But here is my favorite part….I made donut pincushions! Or if you are my children, donut play food for their kitchen!

  1. So much fun! I love your quilt and your donut mug rugs and the pincushions are fabulous. So great that you’ve created something unexpected with the flower and circle dies.

    1. Thank you! I love food and I see a lot of “food” designs when I am looking at things. This isn’t my only food design for Crafters Edge lol. I have a “few” more…….

  2. Your donuts are way toooo sweet ;-} so glad that they are calorie free. I would love a chance to win one.

  3. Hi, Julia, Congratulations on your affiliation with Crafter’s Edge! I’d say you put their products to work in a terrific way! Such a cute idea – pincushion or play food! It’s fun to meet new friends through this hop. I look forward to seeing more of your fun projects and designs!

    1. Deonn, Thank you! I have very much enjoyed the blog hops I have participated in. It is fun to be able to share with others who have similar interests and virtually meet new people.

  4. Oh my gosh, Julia, these are incredible! I LOVE donuts and I am going to have to make some of these pincushions (I don’t have the circle dies yet but they are on my list)!!! I plan to make some pincushions with the flower die, though, and I’ll see how that goes. Ok, the rest of your projects are very cool too. All things donut, right? Love the quilt you made too!

    1. Carol, the circle dies are amazing! I have several projects that include them. The best part was being able to layer them to get the concentric circles to create the donuts. I look forward to seeing your flower die pincushion.

  5. The breakfast food quilts are wonderful. The donut mug rugs are too but my favorite is the no calorie donut pincushions. They look delicious and can be customized to the recipient. Great post for my morning of clouds and pending rain.

    1. Gretchen, thank you! Hope your days get sunnier soon! I agree that the donuts are so customizable to the recipient. My children have already requested what “flavors” they want lol.

  6. What cute mug rugs you designed. But, oh my gosh, the donuts are so adorable! And versatile as your children have shown. I chuckled when I saw the entire backer’s selection of donuts. I know how it goes when you have so much fun making something that you just can’t stop.

    1. I made so many not only because they are so easy, but I always want to be in my art room sewing but due to watching children in my home I cannot. This project allowed me to bring the sewing wherever I went once I got to certain parts of the process. I also like the children to see me working with my hands vs watching tv or being on the computer or phone.

  7. your projects are all wonderful. what fun doughnuts. thanks for the give a way. have a wonderful week

  8. Oh my goodness, Julia, these are adorable! I can see why they would become addictive even if they can’t be eaten. You rocked the kitchen blog hop and the Crafter’s Edge dies…love it! Thank you for sharing these yummies.

    1. Thank you Carol! When I saw the sign ups for the Kitchen Blog hop posted I knew I had to get on board. I see a lot of “food” designs in simple shapes. And this post will not be my only food post for Crafters Edge lol. I have a “few” more lol!

  11. Those doughnut pincushions are the best. My one grand arranges all my pins in the pincushions each time she comes; she’d be overjoyed with one of these. THEY do look good enough to eat
