Candy Cane Refrigerator Door Handles

Photo from our wedding day in August 2009

This week on Thermoweb’s blog it is all about candy canes! But if I may digress for one moment. Since it is Veterans Day, I would like to thank all of those who have fought or are still fighting for my freedoms as an American Citizen. Thank you. Especially to my husband. He served for 6 years in the Army National Guard and did 2 overseas tours. He is my hero.

For my candy cane project, I wanted to make something that was small and easy to whip up as well as very useful for the holiday season. The idea hit me when I was getting something out of the fridge and noticed how disgusting my refrigerator door and freezer door handles were. I have 2 young children who are in and out of the fridge making the handles not the cleanest. So, refrigerator door handles were a must!

For this project I not only wanted to cover my refrigerator handles to help with the mess, but I wanted the covers to be easy to clean as well, so I used HeatnBond Liquid Vinyl.  HeatnBond Liquid Vinyl can make your favorite fabrics stain-resistant, water-resistant and even waterproof.  This application is perfect for these refrigerator door handle covers.  In fact, these are so easy to make it will be hard not to have one for EVERY SEASON!

IMPORTANTThe addition of Thermoweb’s Liquid Vinyl helps with the structure of the project. You can make the handles without it, but the results/fitting might be slightly different.

You can find the FULL tutorial over on Thermoweb’s Blog!

You can even make one for your oven door handle and if you are really ambitious, try shortening the length of the cover to fit the microwave!

Happy sewing!

  1. This is so cute! Thank you for sharing it with us. I have a question. How do you keep the fabric handle up on your refrigerator door? I know the velcro will keep it wrapped around the metal handle, but how does it not slide down and bunch up at the bottom? Yours is centered on the handle so perfectly, and I see mine sliding down to the bottom of the handle, lol.

    1. Thanks for sharing your sweet comment. Honestly, it does slide. It does rest on the bottom most of the time but with little ones that’s where they grab the most, so it works out. They are also long enough that where I grab, they still cover. It hasn’t bunched up at the bottom yet. If you have longer door handles for like a full French Door Fridge, you might just need to make the pieces longer.

    2. Also, did you use the liquid vinyl? I think mine doesn’t bunch because the liquid vinyl stiffens up the fabric preventing bunching.
