Wonderful World of Color Blog Hop

Joan from Moose Stash Quilting said “the sky is the limit. Color, world, let’s face it, anything fits this theme, don’t you think?” I couldn’t agree more! With so many options to choose from, trying to decide what to make was puzzling. However, I love rainbows, so COLOR was the option I went for.

In high school geometry (my favorite math class) we made what are called Parabolic Curve String Art. I won’t go into a math lesson here because I honestly don’t remember it, but also because I was more interested in the art that was created than the actual lesson! For some time now I have wanted to recreate what I did so many years ago in quilt form. This hop has given me the chance to do just that.

I chose to use a hexagon as my starting shape. To get the perfect hexagon, I used one of my Crafter’s Edge hexagon dies as a template. The die was much too small, but it helped me draw the lines and the exact angles I needed to make a larger one.

Once my hexagon was drawn, I marked 1/2″ increments. I then began drawing my straight lines from the different axis points. I used these lines as my guide for sewing each color. For this hop I chose to focus on COLOR, so I used a rainbow of colored thread to complete my quilt.

A quick run under some hot steam erased the drawn lines. I decided to simply bind it with hangers. It measures approx. 17″ square.

I had so much fun making this piece that I just had to try out another design. I used the same shape and size as well as the same amount of axis points. The only difference was how I connected those points. I chose to do all different hues of purple. I have several other designs I really want to try both with the hexagon shape as well as square. You might see more of these in the near future because they are a quick and pleasurable make.

Thanks for joining me today!

  1. My geometry teacher was very traditional, but his wife is a quilter…I wish she’d influenced him to do a similar lesson! The only lesson that stands out for me from geometry was a video with Donald Duck explaining how pool was all about angles.

  2. Now, are those fun or what? I knew that one day, I would kick myself for never liking math. Here we are today. I bow down to you…all that geometry stuff just boggled my mind and I never made friends with it. But you have rocked the math world with your colors. Awesome job of it too!

  3. Wow, your projects are amazing! I LOVE them. I’m going to have to make at least one of them. 🙂 I don’t see evidence of backstitching. Did you bury all your ends? You are always so creative, Julia. Thanks for sharing this with us.

  4. This is definitely a WOW project. I liked geometry but I don’t remember this at all. The finished pieces are amazing. Thanks for sharing.

  5. I am absolutely blown away by your Hop project(s)!! Too bad that I have to leave for work in a few minutes or I might seriously be heading down a rabbit hole today. I’m NOT a math person, but I love the look of both of your mini quilts!

  6. Oh, this is so fun. I did this for a project a few years ago and love to look at it every day. Such a fantastic project for this hop. Love it.

  7. I think I need a tutorial, cause I want to make at least 8 of these, my math brain isn’t top notch. These are awesome and look like fun. I’m always up for some fun. Thanks for the introduction, and I really do hope you make a tutorial to get people like me started.

  8. I can remember drawing things like these, but doing them in thread is awesome! I love all the colors and sweet borders you added. I need to make one of these! Thanks for sharing this colorful idea, Julia.

  9. Wow! I love all three of your designs. I think you remember more of the math than you thought you had. This is the BEST use of color. Outstanding.

  10. What a nice and interesting quilt. ‘Love the striped binding too. The design reminds me of those etching toys from years ago in childhood.

  11. Your wall hangings are fabulous! What a great idea, and I love all the colorful thread you used.
