Supplies:
- 6 coordinating fabrics for flower petals
- 3/4 yard front backing fabric
- 3/4 yard backing fabric
- Fabric for flower centers
- batting
- Crafter’s Edge Crossover II
- Rounded Dresden Die
- Circle Die (3″)
- Fusible interfacing (I used pellon fusible interfacing sf101)
- binding fabric
Cut out 4 rounded Dresden’s from each fabric chosen for your flower petals. You should have 24 petals.
Cut out 24 petals from your interfacing.
Sew your flower petals and interfacing together. Place right side of fabric to the bumpy or sticky side of you interfacing. I left the small end of the flower petal open.
Turn right side out. DO NOT PRESS. To turn right side out make a slit on the interfacing with either scissors or a seam ripper. Use that slit to turn your flower petal right side out. For more assistance with interfacing applique click on my tutorial link below.
Check out my interfacing applique tutorial here.
Cut out 4 circles of fabric and 4 circles of fusible interfacing using the 3″ circle die. Follow the steps above for interfacing applique.
Cut out your front background fabric. Each rectangle should measure 13″ x 19″ (It is cut slightly larger to help offset any shrinkage during quilting).
Place your flower petals on the short edge of the background fabric. Place them a full inch away from the edge.
Place a full inch from both the bottom and top of the background fabric.
Press your flower petals to the front backing.
Applique in any method you choose. I chose to machine applique using two different applique stitches.
Iron and applique your center circle.
Next, layer your placement top, batting and backing fabric and quilt.
Trim your placemat. Start trimming on the flower side. measure a 1/4″ from the side of the petals. Trim the remaining sides of the placemat to approximately 12″ x 18″. Bind your placemats and your are finished! Follow the steps below for a wide flanged binding.
Wide Flanged Binding Tutorial:
This binding is about 1/4″ wider than your typical binding.
- Cut your fabric. For flanged binding, you will need two pieces of fabric. The main fabric is what shows the most and the flange is the smaller skinny detail. Cut the amount you need of each and sew each of them together individually to create long strips.
2. Once you have your longs strips sewn together, sew the main fabric and the flange fabric together,
3. Press towards the main fabric.
4. Fold in half and press. Your binding is ready to go!
Sew to your project!
Happy Sewing!
