Sew it Show it: Say What?!?

Say What? We have all heard that our quilts speak to us, so just what are they saying?

For me, it’s usually the fabric that speaks to me. And if that fabric has anything to do with food….then it SINGS!

I love anything food related. So, for this hop I went to my stash to see if I had any food fabric that would work for what I had in mind. Turns out I did! I had a fun snack food fabric that would work perfect for a microwaveable popcorn popper bag.

I found several tutorials on how to make a reusable popcorn popper bag, but I was skeptical of it actually working because none of the tutorials actually show it popping the corn. So, I made a tutorial and video myself AND I included the popping process.

The yellow spoke to me since it is my FAVORITE color!

Any you know what……It ACTUALLY WORKS! The popcorn was wonderful. I love the convince of microwave popcorn but hate the idea of all the bad stuff in it. This bag popped the kernels beautifully and left me with deliciously popped corn that I could flavor any way I wanted.

You can make one for yourself very easily. Check out my YouTube Video tutorial and see for yourself!

Materials:

  • (2) 12″ x 22″ 100% cotton pieces of fabric
  • Sewing Machine and notions
  • 100% cotton sewing thread

Instructions:

  1. Cut out fabric and layer them right sides together.
  2. Sew around the rectangle with a 1/4″ seam allowance but leave an opening for turning.
  3. Clip corners and turn right side out. Press.
  4. Topstitch around the piece to close the opening.
  5. With the outer fabric of the bag facing up, fold over 2″ on one of the short edges.
  6. Fold up the bottom edge to meet the top edge.
  7. Sew up both open sides and reinforce the top area.
  8. Make the box corners (see video)
  9. Turn right side out

To make the popcorn:

  1. Pour 1/4 cup to 1/2 cup of popcorn kernals
  2. Microwave for 2.5 minutes. Do not leave unattended and stop the microwave if you do not hear popping for 10 seconds.
  3. Pour into a bowl and season with your choice of toppings.
The snack themed fabric just spoke to me and said it needed to be something for food!

What is really nice about these bags, is no oil is involved making it much healthier. The bags themselves also stay pretty clean so you can probably use them several times before giving them a wash.

The bags would also be a great gift. You can use the bag themselves to hold some popcorn kernels and a variety of season salts and tie a festive bow around it. (Thinking this might be what I make for the family this coming holiday season.)

  1. Love this! My family loves popcorn, this could be a game changer. Thanks for the video.

  2. Say What? I’ve never seen anything like this before. This is brilliant. I love popcorn and I agree, all the bad stuff in the store bought microwave popcorn is a bit much. Great video too. Guess what I will be doing later on today! LOL!!

  3. What a neat idea! I had no idea this existed let alone work. DO you close up the bag so the popcorn doesn’t fly out of the bag when popping?
First time on your blog – here for the “challenge” but such a neat idea!

  4. You are a wonder! That’s a fantastic idea and one I’m going to make and use, too. Thanks for the video – I haven’t watched it yet (Too early here; I might disturb hubby.) but know it’ll be just what I want. Thanks, Julia.

  5. PS I was able to watch the You Tube video on this website but when I tried to connect to YouTube itself it wouldn’t let me – it said it was blocked. Any ideas?

  6. I went through the back door and finally got it to play. What I did was go to youtube.com, look for you and your videos, and then found the proper video. WaLa, it works perfectly.

    1. That was very strange. I tried to go to YouTube as well, and it said blocked. I went ahead and reloaded the video to my blog and it seems to work now. Thank you for making me aware of this! I really appreciate it!

  7. This is fabulous and watching your video made it look so easy (and yummy.) Thanks for showing this! Making them into gifts is a great idea!

  8. Thanks for the great video. I look forward to making a popcorn bag and giving it a try.

  9. Super idea. I wonder why people don’t show the popping corn like you did. I would have doubted it, too, but seeing yours, I see it works. Great fabric for the bag.

  10. What a terrific idea. Not to mention super simple to put together. We all know that the fabric is on hand I just need to get some fresh pop corn into the house. Thanks for the video, I am definitely the person who does better when I can visualize a process and yours was very clear and to the point. Would you mind if I shared this idea with my sewing group. It would make an over the top Show and Tell ( and Smell ). I would definitely aim them at your video too,

  11. What a perfect idea! I’m a popcorn freak but hate the bad stuff in microwave popcorn. I’ll be making one for me and probably everyone in my family as gifts. Thank you for a fabulous project

  12. What a fantastic project! I enjoy popcorn a couple of times a week as a tv snack but it is oily and pricey to buy the microwaveable bags. Your bag is the perfect solution! Thank you so much for the tutorial. Hope to check out your cupcake pincushion video, too.

  13. I just love this and was so delighted with it i’ve already made ½ for friends. Thanks so much for the wonderful idea
