Island Batik Paper-Pieced Celebrations Blog Hop

Hello and Welcome!

Today on the blog I am featuring my fourth project for Island Batik! This month we are doing another fun blog hop and its theme is paper piecing. I am more of a traditional piecing kind of girl, but I know how to design and sew paper piecing as well.

This month I designed a paper pieced Lone Star Quilt. I wanted to make a statement with big bold pieces and play with a traditional block design when making the arms of the quilt. My inspiration block was the Bouquet Block. This block in a square form can be traditionally pieced. However, place it on an angle and it becomes something that needs to be paper pieced. Even the hard angels of the rectangles can be traditionally pieced if you know how.

For this month’s blog hop I got to work with Island Batiks newest available collection, “Oasis” by Kathy Engle for BestQuilter from their winter 2023 collection. It is BEAUTIFUL! It reminds me of the ocean with its blues, teals, browns and tans. This particular collection will be shipping to stores near you in May 2024!

However, this month’s challenge was more than just create a paper pieced quilt. The theme this month is also CELEBRATIONS! We were challenged to design a paper-pieced quilt that celebrates the spirit of a holiday of your choice, transforming fabric into a visual ode to joy and festivity!

The colors of my quilt remind me of summers at the beach. However, the design on the fabric includes evergreen trees, pine needles and pinecones. I was in a conundrum. The fabric is slightly wintery but also reminds me of the summertime. Then it hit me.

SUMMER CAMP!

The colors of summer and designs that remind me of hiking in the woods.

I used to go to Girl Scout camp every summer, from the time I was 5 years old till my senior year in high school. It gave me memories to last a lifetime. I have since gone back to Girl Scout Camp when I became a leader for my daughters. My quilt is inspired by my days at summer camp–Hiking in the woods as well as soaking up the sunshine and fresh air!

For even more authenticity, I made sure to get my photographs at one of the Girl Scout Camps in my area. I am helping plan a week of memories for the current Girl Scouts and my team had our volunteer training at the camp we are hosting it. The photos you see here were all taken at Camp Butterworth in South Western Ohio.

In addition to the beautiful colors of the “Oasis” fabric line, I also used Hobbs 100% cotton batting, my Oliso Iron and Schmetz needles.

  1. The most important lesson on quilting was when I went from garment making to quilting–I soon learned the importance of accurate seam allowances!

  2. Every quilter knows the “Measure twice, cut once” rule. Well, I can remember 3 times in my quilty life that I messed up royally because I didn’t follow the rule!

  3. Those are the most gorgeous Color’s and what a fabulous Quilt. I really must try to make it. Thanks for sharing.

  4. Lovely quilt. Most valuable lesson from a mistake? A mistake is not terrible, it is recoverable. If it is a cutting mistake, then recut in the extra or in a similar fabric. If it is a sewing mistake then rip it out. If your frustrated, put the project in timeout and do something else for a while (thus preventing more mistakes). The mistakes and how you handle them is one of the things that make your quilt not like anyone else’s even if you are sewing a kit.
