Hello and welcome!
Today’s post is my very first Island Batik Ambassador project! This project is part of Island Batik’s Log Cabin Blog Hop.
We are on week three of the Block hop and the challenge was to create a log cabin quilt–“a great challenge from an old favorite!” Would you believe me if I said that before this hop, I had actually never made a log cabin quilt!?! That’s right! This is my very first log cabin quilt.
The fabric I received for this project is from Island Batik’s Fall 2023 Collection called “Rollin’ Round by Kathy Engle for Quilting Renditions.” This set is beautiful and has a release date of February 2024.
When designing my quilt, I wanted to something other than a regular square quilt block design, so I chose to spice things up and make my blocks on a 60-degree angle! This gave my blocks and quilt more of a tumbling block look.
A tumbling block quilt is really amazing in itself, but it has Y seams, and I did not want to have to fiddle with those. So, I eliminated the Y seams and created a FREE pattern that you yourself can try! Keep reading to find out.
As my quilt was starting to come together, I noticed that in addition to the tumbling block look it also looked like books that were open being read or open face down and they were all connected like a worm. This is where the title of the pattern comes from–Bookworm.
I had so much fun creating this quilt.

Thanks for sharing your fun version of the log cabin, and for creating a pattern! I hope to be able to try it someday, although I’ve never even made a traditional log cabin yet. Lots to add to the quilting bucket list!
Your quilt design is a cleaver use of a log cabin block. Thanks for sharing your pattern.

Love the 3d effect.
Your quilt is so cool – tumbling blocks or books! Beautiful fabrics too.
That design is amazing! I love it so much.
Bookworm is awesome! It’s so cool how it tricks the eye with the angles. I avoid any pattern with Y seams…just the idea of them makes me cringe! Good for you for working around them and creating a pattern that appears to have them, but doesn’t! High five to you!
Wow Julia! Your quilt is so awesome. I love 3D quilts. This is a gorgeous quilt and the fabrics are so beautiful too.. Thank you so much for sharing your pattern with us.
