That’s right! We are screaming for cupcakes in this tutorial. Cupcakes that turn into ICE CREAM!
If this isn’t your first trip to my blog, you may already know that I love to look at things and imagine outside the box. For example, looking at a cupcake die kit and thinking, “if I add a triangle to the bottom instead of the base of the cake I’ll have a teeny tiny ice cream cone, but if I add more icing layers, it will grow into the frozen swirly treat we all love!”
So that is what I did!
For this fun quilt block I used the Crafter’s Edge cupcake and equilateral triangle die sets. I also used Thermoweb’s HeatnBond Lite Fusible Adhesive.
Sewing Instructions:
The dies below will be used in this project. You will use the 3.5″ triangle die.
Choose what fabrics you want to use for your quilt block. Following the manufactures instructions, fuse the double sided fabric adhesive to your fabric. I used Thermoweb HeatnBond Lite.
Using the Crafter’s Edge Crossover II machine, cut out your pieces. You will need the following:
- 1 -Triangle Cone Base
- 2 -Cupcake Base
- 2 -First Layer of Frosting
- 2 -Second Layer of Frosting
- 1 -Top Frosting Whip
- 1 -Cherry
Arrange your pieces to your quilt block square background. This block measure 12.5″ unfinished. Peel the backing off the pieces and press to fuse.
At this point your quilt block is semi completed. You can turn it into a mini quilt and finish it now or make several blocks and make a larger quilt. For this project, I decided to just make a mini wall hanging for my sister who LOVES ice cream. The fusible adhesive I used is not permanent. It has to be sewn down in some way. HeatnBond does sell an ultra-hold that doesn’t require stitching.
I layered my quilt block with batting and backing fabric. I quilted and then trimmed my mini. I added binding and hanging corners and I was finished!
I just love how this mini came out! Now I’m imagining how else I could use the little cupcake die set as well as all the different “flavor” combinations that are possible!
What flavor would you make?
Happy sewing!

Very cute and creative, Julia! Now I want that cupcake die that I previously thought was of no interest to me! LOL
