Make it a patchwork by sewing 5″ squares together or 5″ strips and simply trimming to the correct size.
Have you ever been out in the garden and realize that you have more than you can carry? Did you think your lovely cucumbers produced maybe 2-3 but come to find out there were several hiding and now they are HUGE and you need a bowl or a basket to carry everything? If you are like me then this happens ALL THE TIME! Well have no fear, I am going to give you the tools to make your very own harvest apron! Harvest aprons are nothing new. I have seen several vintage patterns out on the internet as well as videos and tutorials. I found my inspiration here by Sew Very Easy. You can follow her steps to make the apron. I also have created my own tutorial and you can find it on my YouTube page. I make sewing the waistband a bit easier.
I love this apron. It works great out in the garden gathering tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers. I initially made it to help gather all my green beans. I plant over 200 bush beans every year so I can, pressure can them for winter storage. I used to take out several bowls for gathering but trying to hold the bowl and be gentle when picking the beans was cumbersome. The apron works great because it keeps my hands free for picking the beans.
In addition, since I made this apron I have used it not only in the garden but in the house as well. It helps me gather up the kids small toys that seem to end up all over the house.
Harvest Apron with an Elastic Pocket
I made my pocket with elastic. This allows the pocket to be bigger and it helps keep items inside better. The number one thing I keep in my pocket is my cell phone.
I wear this apron more around the house then I do for the actual garden and having a place to keep my phone while cooking and cleaning is helpful.
Here are the additional supplies needed to make a pocket for your apron:
- 11”x16” piece of fabric
- 8” of 1/4” elastic
Step One
Fold the upper edge of your pocket over and press a 1/2” hem. Stitch in place.
Step Two
Fold the top of your pocket over again and top stitch to make a casing for the elastic. I sew close to the hemmed edge. **The picture does not show the top stitch. It only shows the hem folded over the second time.
Step Three
Press and baste a hem on the bottom of the pocket. Pull the bobbin thread to ruffle the bottom of the pocket.
Step Four
Insert the elastic into the casing and secure both ends.
Step Five
Turn the side raw edges under and press. Next pin the pocket where you want it to be on the apron.
Step Six
At this point I sewed the pocket on. I sewed the two sides and the bottom leaving the top open. I also secured the bottom of the pocket by going back and fourth with my stitching. If you do not want the bottom ruffled seam on the outside follow my additional steps below.
** If you do not want the bottom pocket on the outside follow these steps:
- Once you have ruffled your bottom and secured the elastic on the top of your pocket, pin the pocket right sides together with the apron just below where you want your pocket to be. The bottom of the pocket will be toward the top of the apron and the top of the pocket will be closer to the bottom of the apron. Secure the bottom of the pocket to the apron by going back and fourth a couple times. Next flip the pocket up to its final position and pin it to the apron. Finally, sew both sides down.
I even made my older daughter one. She uses for carrying her toys as well as when she helps me clean up the house. Her favorite chore to do it WASH WINDOWS!
