Halloween Quilt

42”x 42”

It’s finally October and fall is in full session!

I absolutely LOVE fall! The cooler weather, leaves turning, jewel toned flowers, and cinnamon & spices EVERYWHERE! But my favorite thing about fall is the PUMPKINS!

I once or maybe a doz-illion times told people that I would keep pumpkins up all year if I could….What’s stopping me really?!?!? I would put up red and green for Christmas, blue and white for winter, red and pink for February, red white and blue…you get the idea. However, to make them more special I have only allowed myself to display pumpkins in September-November. But I digress.

This post is about my Halloween quilt. I actually made it in July/August to make sure I had it done for October. The quilt measures 42″ x 42″ and it was really easy to make. I particularly love the four little stars that break up the sashing between the blocks. I saw that technique while browsing Pinterest and I just had to add it to one of my quilts.

Each quilt block measures 12 1/2″ x 12 1/2″ unfinished and the sashing before being sewed in was cut to 2 1/2″. I will outline the sizes I used for making the quilt block. I am doing this retroactively so I will not be able to have a full photo step by step tutorial or total fabric yardage needed. I will not be doing the sashing in this tutorial. I will do one of those at a later time.

Materials:

9 coordinating fabrics cut into the following sizes:

  • Each fabric should have 9 – 4 1/2″ squares
  • Each fabric should have 8 – 2 1/2″ squares

Each block will have 8 larger squares of one fabric (which I will refer to as the main fabric) plus one larger square for the center (coordinating fabric). Each block will also have 8 smaller squares that are sewn to make the “points” of each star. Refer to the first image to see how each block is laid out.

Sewing Instructions:

  1. Take one of your main fabric pieces and sew the smaller square to the corner using the easy corner triangle method. This method is used in a lot of my quilts and in every pattern in my shop. The easy corner triangle method is simply this: Draw a diagonal line on the small square from one corner to the other. Place that small square in the corner of the larger square and sew on the drawn line. Trim away the corner leaving a 1/4″ seam and press. See diagram below.

  1. Using the easy corner triangle method again, sew another small square to the other corner of the one you just sewed.
  1. Repeat steps one and two 3 more times so you have a total of 4 squares with star points on them.
  2. Looking at the photo below for layout, sew the following: 1. (main fabric square-main/star point square-main fabric square) 2. (main/star point-contrast middle square-main/star point) 3. (main fabric square-main/star point square-main fabric square) Please refer to the photo…like I said earlier, I am writing this post after I have already completed the quilt and do not have in-progress photos.

  1. Sew the three strips together referring to the photo below.

There you have it. The steps I took to create my Halloween star quilt blocks. This block is also referred to as the “Sawtooth Star.”

Have a Happy Fall & Happy Halloween!
