Week 1 Folded Hexagon Star

Week 2 Folded Origami Circle

Week 3 Tsumami Kanzashi

This week I bring you TWO ornaments. A simple fabric ball and one of my own creations I’m calling the Yo-yo Photo or Yo-yo Embellished ornament. We will being with the my Yo-yo Embellished Ornament.

Yo-yo Embellished Ornament

Supplies:

  • Crafter’s Edge Crossover II
  • Circle die set
  • Mini Circle die set 2
  • Fabric (scraps work great for this!)
  • Needle and thread
  • Foam ball 2.5″
  • sequin pins
  • sequins
  • floral pins with pearls on the end
  • decorative ribbon

You don’t have to use the Crossover II and dies to make this project. You can draft your own circle templates or use a circle ruler you already have. Using the Crossover II machine allowed me to make several sizes and cut out several perfect circles at a time.

Instructions:

  1. Cut out your mini circles using the largest die from the mini circle set 2. I cut out 16. I only ended up using 14 of them. Every project will be different.
  2. Make your yo-yos. To make a yo-yo, stitch a running stitch all the way around your circle and pull closed. Secure thread to the back.
  3. Gather the rest of your supplies.
  4. Cut out 2 4″ circles using the 4″ circle Crafter’s Edge die.
  5. Attach your larger circles to your foam ball using your sequin pins.
  6. Begin embellishing your ornament. For this particular one, I used the pearl floral pins with a red and white sequin and one of my yo-yo’s. After I put all the yo-yos around the center of the ball (hiding the seam) I took my decorative ribbon and placed it just underneath the yo-yos. I secured the ribbon with more sequin pins. I added some more sequins for decoration and then added a hanging string.

How to Make a Photo Yo-yo Ornament:

This is my absolute favorite ornament. While I did not come up with this concept, I made it my own with the yo-yos. Growing up my mother always had a beautiful photo ornament of me and each of my siblings. I knew I wanted something for my family so I made these.

Throwback to our FIRST Christmas as a married couple!

To make these you follow the same steps as above to make your yo-yos. (You can also make slightly larger yo-yos with a bigger circle die) However, for this ornament to work you need to slice off the front of your foam ball to create a flat surface. You also just wrap the fabric around one side of the foam ball so your circle needs to be bigger. The back is a great place to put a year or a name if it is short enough. I also love adding the longer floral pins with more beads. I love the drippy icicle look on ornaments.

WE ARE NOT FINISHED YET !

I told you that I would have TWO ornament tutorials today and I am here to deliver.

This ornament is much simpler in nature but I will tell you it is actually more difficult. This ornament is made by sewing curves.

To make our second ornament you will need the Crafter’s Edge Toy Ball Die.

Supplies:

  • Crafter’s Edge Crossover II
  • Toy Ball Die
  • Fabric
  • Sewing Machine
  • Needle and Thread
  • Polyfil Stuffing

Instructions:

Cut your fabric according to the directions given, Look at the photo above. Make sure to have your fold at the bottom of the opening of the die. If you place your fabric fold at the bottom of the metal edge of the die you will get an egg shape vs. a ball shape. See the photo below.

Sew your two cut pieces together with a 1/4″ seam, leaving at least an inch or two open to stuff. Close your ball with a blind stitch and attach a sting hanger. You are finished!

Simple enough but honestly sewing the curves is a challenge.

Which ornament is your favorite?
