DIY Sidewalk Chalk

This is such a fun project to do with the kids. I wasn’t sure about it, but after trying it, the kids and I are hooked! It is so simple. It only requires 3 ingredients and that includes water! You probably already have it in the pantry too, which is a added bonus.

Materials Needed:

  • Water
  • Cornstarch
  • Food Coloring

Instructions:

Mix equal parts water and cornstarch—I typically do 1/2 cup of water and cornstarch for my two girls and I. Melody likes to still dump the paint a lot so I try not to waste too much in one sitting. This amount of chalk paint usually lasts us 30 minutes or so depending of the dumping factor.

Once the cornstarch and water are mixed, divide into cups and add the food coloring. Gather your paint brushes and kids and head outside!

Below you will see my test of a thin application vs. a thick one. As you can see, the thin is still very vibrant. It also takes a lot less time to dry and uses less paint which makes the fun last longer.

WARNING!

Do Not let your toddler spill the paint then step around in it unless you want colorful feet! She had fun but that was the first and last time I let her do that!
