DIY Scrunchies FREE Tutorial

Hello and welcome to Inflorescence Designs.

Today’s tutorial is how to make a beautiful hair scrunchie.

What goes around comes around as they say. Scrunchies were really big when I was younger, and they are back in style.

I love hair scrunchies. I have fine hair but A LOT of it, so most of the time simple hair ties put a lot of strain on my hair making it hurt. A scrunchie helps eliminate that with the softness of the fabric and the extra hold it has on my hair.

So, let’s make a mountain of them in every color!

Regular Hair Scrunchie

Supplies:

  • 8″ of 3/8″ elastic
  • 4 1/4″ x 22 1/2 fabric

Instructions:

Begin by sewing the elastic into a circle. Overlap the elastic 1″ and sew a zig zag stitch to secure. Next, fold the fabric into a tube right sides together matching the short ends. Sew a 1/4″ seam along the short edge.

With the tube in front of you fold over the top edge closest to you to the center. Fold the opposite side back towards you. Then, fold the bottom layer of the tube over to the other side of the bottom layer. Insert the elastic tube into the fabric tube. Begin sewing a 1/4″ seam along the bottom layers. Sew all the way around the tube leaving a 2″ opening. To sew this tube, you will have to continue to pull the fabric out of the folded area. To better understand this process, watch the video below for more details.

Once the tube is sewn, pull it right side out through the opening. Stitch the opening closed. Finished!

Happy Sewing!
