Call Me Crazy Blog Hop

The Challenge: Sew something that you wouldn’t normally sew or share something you can’t believe you sewed. We all know that crazy and scary feeling of wondering what we were thinking when we started or were in the middle of sewing something out of our comfort zone.

Before I signed up for this hop, I was already working on something interesting. A few months back I created a new pattern. The pattern is called “Bubble Tea/ Iced Coffee.” I created a traditionally pieced pattern with the addition of applique. This pattern if my first applique pattern that I am selling which in itself is crazy. I usually stick to traditional or paper pieced patterns.

On top of that, I created this pattern without having ever had bubble tea! Thats right, I have never tasted Bubble Tea also known as Boba tea. From my research boba tea is made of tea, milk, water, sugar and tapioca pearls, although, more variations have been made with fruit juices and other beverages. I love the way the drink looks with the variety of colors and flavors and the little tapioca pearls swirling around.

To give more variety to this pattern, I included applique templates for ice cubes so an iced coffee or other drink can be made.

I have decided that my new challenge is to try Bubble Tea. I have found one shop nearby that sells them as well as a food truck. Personally, I think I will like a Bubble Tea made with fruit juices vs milk and tea. I love tea but not with the addition of milk.

When it came to quilting this, I also did scribble quilting around the “pearls.” I applied them to the quilt block with Thermoweb’s HeatnBond Lite and then scribble quilted them in a similar color.

  1. Cute, cute, cute! I’ve never tried bubble tea, but that quilt makes it look very appealing. Congratulations on stepping into the world of applique patterns. Having the combo of piecing and applique made this pattern a winner, Julia! Thanks for sharing!

  2. Adorable quilt! I love boba, but I generally get it as a slushy with fruit juice and boba, no tea, no milk, although you can get those variations.

  3. Oh my goodness, I absolutely LOVE it. I’ve never had Boba tea either, but this quilt is so much fun, that I might have to make a fabric one as well.

  4. What a darling quilt! I love how you’ve incorporated pieced and applique methods in your design, and your colors are fantastic! I have never heard of Bubble Tea but will be on the lookout for it now.

  5. That is a cute quilt, Julia! Clever idea since Boba Tea is such a rage now. I like it, but prefer it without the “boba.” Thanks for sharing! Hope your pattern sells well!

  6. Cute! I haven’t tried bubble tea either, although there are a bunch of places that sell it in my area. I like tea with ice, and that’s it.

  7. So cute, but no Bubble Tea for you – you must be crazy to design a pattern around it. I’ll admit I’ve not had one either but your pattern makes it look lovely.

  8. Cute quilt! I’ve never heard of bubble tea.. and though I love tea, it does not sound like something I would like!! But maybe I should try it too one day… 🙂 Thanks for sharing! xx

  9. Cute quilt pattern, Never heard of that tea mix – call me crazy, but I don’t care for tea.
