Blog Hop: Show Your Stripes!

Welcome! I am so excited to be participating in my very first blog hop. I have just loved what I have seen so far at the other participating blogs. Thank you again to Carla from Creatin in the Sticks for hosting.

For my project I decided to make a quilt coat. I have made one other in the past (see the full details here) but ever since I made that one, I wanted to make another.

My original thought was to make sure it wasn’t as “loud” as my first but in reality that is not who I am when it comes to my art. I am definitely an introvert but I like to show my colors in my quilting and art work.

Without further ado……

POP! RED STRIPES!

I used the Tamarack Pattern by Grainline Studios. I added a hood.

I also wanted to make a tutorial to go along with this. To be honest, I searched the internet for a stripy pattern at first. I knew what I wanted and essentially I knew what needed to be done to attain it, but I wanted to see if there were step by step instructions for what I was envisioning. Now I am sure there is a tutorial out there in the world but I wasn’t able to find what I was looking for. So that gave me the idea to write down what I wanted. Now this tutorial is almost self explainable but I am sure there is someone out there who might like step by step instructions on how to do what I did.

Tutorial: Wonky Stripes Quilt Block

Cut your strips of fabric. The lines above are to give you an idea of how to alternate the angel in which to cut. My fabric started at 9″ x WOF (width of fabric)
Line up fabric in the order you wish to sew. To attain a more squared up block, alternate the wide and narrow ends of you strips.
Sew your strips together. I would suggest pressing seams open. I did not do this and when quilting my piece I had to manipulate my quilt to make sure my seams were facing the correct direction so it would lay flat.
Square up your block. I started with 9″ strips and after I finished sewing them together, I was able to successfully square them up to 8″. The blocks will be wonky due to the nature of how the strips are cut. I also had to make sure that I didn’t piece a lot of skinny strips together or my block would never make it to 8″. I made sure to choose both fat and skinny strips.
Finished quilt block
The blocks sewn together in alternating directions. This would make a really nice design for a quilt.

  1. What a pleasant surprise, an article of clothing! Your jacket looks wonderful! A great way to mix up a striped design with the blocks. And how fun is that striped lining and dots. Well done!

    1. Thank you! I actually donated it to a fundraiser for a girl I graduated high school with. Her husband worked at the country jail as a deputy and recently lost his life to complications due to covid which he got from his job. I wasn’t really close to the girl but I knew I needed to help and when I heard the news I literally had just finished my coat and knew that, that is what it was meant for.
