Welcome to week two of the Fabric Ornament Parade! To check out the first week click below!
This week we are doing another simple origami fabric ornament that can be found all over the web. I am calling this weeks ornament the Folded Origami Circle Ornament. I believe this may be the original tutorial.
Origami Circle Ornament
Supplies:
- Crafter’s Edge Crossover II
- Circle die set (6.5″ circle)
- Fabric (scraps work great for this!)
- Needle
- Matching Thread
- Button or other embellishment
- Sewing Machine and Iron
You don’t have to use the Crossover II and dies to make this project. You can draft your own circle templates or use a circle ruler you already have. Using the Crossover II machine allowed me to make several sizes and cut out several perfect circles at a time.
Instructions:
- Cut your fabric using the 6.5″ circle die. Cut 2 coordinating fabrics.
- With right sides together, sew around the circle 1/4″ leaving a small opening for turning. ***
- Turn right side out, fold under raw edge, press and stitch around the edge of the circle about 1/8″.
- Fold your circle in half. The side on the inside will be the petals.
- Take your needle and thread and tack the two center points together of the fold you just made.
- With the same thread, insert your needle into the center point of the edge of the open side of the circle and repeat on the other side as well.
- Pull your flaps out and secure center if needed. Cut your thread.
- Press open the petal flaps and fold over the top to the back of the ornament. See video below for better illustration.
- Pinch the sides and secure each petal with matching thread. To secure each side, I first bury my thread in the petal and then send my needle and thread through the pinched area making sure to catch all layers. I then tie off and bury my thread. Your hanging thread secures your corner as well.
- Add your embellishment to the center and add a hanging string or decorative metal hook when finished.
*** You can also stitch ALL the way around. If you do this and do not leave an opening, you can cut a small slit just off center of the central point and turn right side out that way. Just make sure to be slightly off center so your slit is covered when you fold the fabric over.
Finished!
I hope you enjoyed making the Origami Circle ornament and thank you for visiting during week two of my Fabric Ornament Parade. Hope to see you next week as we create a beautiful and more complex ornament.
Happy Sewing!
