This week I bring you Tsumami Kanzashi. Tsumami Kanzashi refers to folded fabric flowers and originates from Japan.

You can read more about this art form here.

Tsumami Kanzashi Ornament

Supplies:

  • Crafter’s Edge Crossover II
  • Circle die set
  • Fabric (scraps work great for this!)
  • Needle
  • Matching Thread
  • Button or other embellishment
  • Felt sheet
  • Glue

You don’t have to use the Crossover II and dies to make this project. You can draft your own circle templates or use a circle ruler you already have. Using the Crossover II machine allowed me to make several sizes and cut out several perfect circles at a time.

Instructions:

  1. Cut out your fabric circles. I cut out 5 (4″) circles and 5 (3″) circles for the flower shown in the slide show.
  2. To make your fabric flower petals fold one circle in half and then fold in half again.
  3. Stitch a running stitch along the open end of the folded circle and pull together. Secure.
  4. Continue stitching and adding fabric flower petals till you have 5 large petals sewn in a row. You do not have to cut the thread between each petal and I highly recommend that you sew all the petals using one piece of thread.
  5. Secure the last petal to the first petal creating the flower shape.
  6. If your thread is long enough continue to the next step without trimming your thread. If not tie off and attach another thread to the bottom set of petals.
  7. Make a smaller flower petal using the smaller circles.
  8. Sew in the same manner as above but secure each petal to the petal just below the current one your are sewing. Doing this eliminates having to attach the smaller petals later.
  9. Sew all 5 petals and secure when you get to the last one. Tie off your thread and trim.
  10. Cut out a 1 1/2″ felt circle and glue it to the back of your flower.
  11. Add any embellishment for the front center of your flower. Try gems, buttons, yo-yo’s or vintage costume jewelry!
  12. To make this an ornament, add a hanging string or decorative metal hook when finished.
Look how beautiful this is with a costume jewelry earring!

Finished!

I hope you enjoyed making the Tsumami Kanzashi ornament and thank you for visiting during week three of my Fabric Ornament Parade.

Happy Sewing!
